Top broadband tips

The following broadband tips and advice will help you to resolve broadband connection faults without the need to call us:

1. Turn your computer off for five minutes and then turn it back on.

2. Turn your router or modem off for five minutes and then turn it back on.

3. Ensure all your devices that require a phone socket are plugged into a microfilter. Microfilters are supplied with your router or modem and you'll need one for every phone socket in the house. This includes any that are used for telephones, Sky boxes and burglar alarms.

4. Make sure that your microfilters are plugged directly into the telephone socket and are not connected via an extension lead.

5. Replace any microfilters you're using within your home.

7. If you lose your broadband service please wait for 30 minutes, as most outages only last for a short duration. Did you know you can check our network status updates online? Please see: TalkTalk Network Status.

8. If you connect to the internet wirelessly, ensure that your router is within range of your computer by checking the wireless signal strength. If the signal strength is low, this can cause connection problems.

9. If you need your username and password to connect to the internet, please dial 0870 0875 5629 from your TalkTalk landline.

10. If you need your wireless password to connect a laptop or other computer to your home network, you can find it on the router we supplied you with. If we did not supply your router, please check with the manufacturer of the router.

11. If you have a broadband fault and need to call us, please ensure that you are beside your computer when you call. This will enable us to carry out effective fault finding to ensure you're back online with a minimum of inconvenience.

12. If you're using wireless from your laptop, ensure that your wireless capability is turned on. This can easily be turned off without your knowledge, as it's usually a switch on the side of a laptop.

14. If you want to check if you have gone live, or when you will go live, you can call our automated order tracker FREE on 0800 049 7971. It's really simple, all you need to do is:

  1. Dial 0800 049 7971
  2. Enter your home phone number using your phone keypad.
  3. The order tracker will then let you know the progress of your order and give you the date that your TalkTalk service will go live(there's no queuing or waiting - it's very quick!)

These useful phone tips will help you to resolve any phone issues, without the need to contact us:

3. If you use a cordless phone, please check that the batteries are charged or try new batteries.

4. Check if all the phones in your home have the same problem. If not, the problem may be with the telephone itself. If possible try using another phone handset, preferably corded, to check if the problem is with your line or your phone.

5. If you suspect a phone fault, please check whether you can make or receive calls. You'll need to know this information if you call us to raise a phone fault.

6. If you suspect a phone fault, please check that none of your other phones are off the hook before giving us a call.

7. Check out our Members Forum. There you can get advice and help for a wide range of issues, directly from TalkTalk staff or other customers.

8. Is your phone connected to the master phone socket? If not, move it there and then try again.
Note: The master phone socket is usually located where the phone line first enters your home.

9. If you have any other phones or telephony devices in the house, unplug them and then try again. If you have a Sky box in your home, disconnect it and try again. If you have a dial tone once it's disconnected and you have a broadband connection, please ensure that the box is filtered correctly.
